Singapore reaffirms efforts to combat piracy, sea robberies

Minister for Transport Ong emphasised the need to protect global commons.

Singapore and other contracting parties have reaffirmed the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery’s (ReCAAP) commitment to combat piracy and sea robberies in Asia in a virtual symposium.

In a welcome address during the event, Minister for Transport Ong Ye Kung emphasised the need for the global community to exercise collective responsibility to protect global commons like the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.

“Singapore is honoured to have played an active part in the ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre’s development over the years and will continue to work with the contracting parties of ReCAAP in giving the centre our strongest support,” Ong said.

ReCAAP is the first regional inter-governmental agreement to promote and enhance cooperation against piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia. The symposium also recognised ReCAAP’s achievements over the past 15 years.
