What you must know about Sembcorp Marines' Tuas Integrated Yard

It's a city within a city.

According to Nomura, Phase 1 is built on a 74-hectare area and has one basin and four dry docks with each dry-dock capable of docking a VLCC.

Previously SMM could service only one VLCC at a time and that too one half each time. The basin can pretty much hold anything under construction or planned for construction currently, including the Ultra Large Crude Carriers of 500-600K DWT.

Of the four docks, one is ultra-wide and can fit the largest cruise vessels and another is ultra-long, capable of holding the latest 400m length Maersk triple E class ships under construction at the moment.

The primary focus of the yard is for repair works (14% of 1H13 sales) and conversions (29% of 1H13 sales).

Having to drive almost 90 minutes to reach the location felt like being in another city altogether – and that pretty much exactly is what it is.

SMM has built dormitories to house 4,000 employees at the location, with accommodation for another 4,000+ coming up for the next phase. There will also be resident facilities for the employees of customers in the location.

With the workshop also located within the premises, the Tuas integrated shipyard will be very much self-sufficient when it comes to manpower and most steel components.
