Why is M1 pulling the plug over its $39 for $100 mbps fibre broadband?

M1’s day as a cheap competitor is over as M1 is shifting to corporate deals.

“We will continue to market attractive service plans, and this could also include bundle deals, etc., not necessarily connoting to low value but we will definitely work towards offering the best value-deals to our customers,” M1 senior manager for corporate communications Petrina Teoh told Singapore Business Review.

Ms. Teoh refused to disclose future plans for competitive reasons. She confirmed though that the low value deal of $39 for a 100 mbps offered last month at COMEX IT show which registered fairly good take-up also ended at the conclusion of the event.

M1’s current 100 Mbps fibre plan is priced at a two-year contract of $59/month which is still relatively low than Singtel’s $69.90 and StarHub’s $68 value deals.

“Our 100 Mbps Fibre Broadband deal valued at $39 per month was a hit and we were very delighted with the public’s response to M1’s 100 Mbps Fibre Broadband offer; the M1 booth was packed till closing with interested customers,” she said.

“With increasing awareness, fibre broadband is becoming popular and today, about 75% of our broadband sign-ups choose fibre. We do foresee higher interest being warranted amongst consumers and we will definitely work towards offering M1 customers greater ease and opportunity, in experiencing high-speed broadband services via the fibre network,” added Ms. Teoh

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
