M1 to upgrade 3G network with new base stations

Expect better coverage and call connectivity.

M1 Limited (M1) has announced the appointment of network vendor Huawei, to further expand and upgrade its existing 3G network, at the value of up to S$11 million. The islandwide expansion of M1’s existing 3G network operating on the 2100MHz spectrum band includes the rollout of additional base stations, and a nationwide optimisation programme of the 3G network, to improve call connectivity and customer experience.

M1 said the latest investments complement the recent investment to roll out a 3G radio network on the 900MHz spectrum band and modernise its core network. "This will ensure the provision of comprehensive 3G network coverage to deliver better performance for customers and meet their growing data usage," the telco said.

The network expansion work is scheduled to be completed by the third quarter of 2013.

“While we were the first to offer nationwide 4G service, we are also constantly upgrading our 3G network to ensure our customers achieve better coverage and network performance anytime, anywhere,” said Mr Patrick Scodeller, Chief Operating Officer, M1 Limited.

M1 is provides mobile and fixed services to over 2 million customers and is the first operator to offer nationwide 4G service, as well as ultra high-speed fixed broadband, fixed voice and other services on the Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (NGNBN).

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

If you've been wondering whether SBR could work for your company — yes, probably.

A lot of the companies we partner with started as readers. They'd been following our coverage for a while, saw their own customers and competitors in it, and eventually asked the obvious question: could we do something with you? The answer is usually yes. The shape of it depends on what you're trying to do.

The options are broader than most people assume — thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. Some partners use one channel; most use a mix. We figure out the right combination by starting with your brief, not with our rate card.

So if the question has been on your mind, here's the easy way to ask it.

We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how. It's a better use of everyone's time.
