Singtel unveils WiFi calls feature for postpaid subscribers

It is currently available on selected mobile devices.

With the threat of the fourth player penetrating the telco scene, the big three should be on their feet right now to roll out promos to retain their subscribers. Singtel did just that with the launch of WiFi Calling.

According to Singtel, mobile postpaid subscribers will be able to make high-definition quality voice calls and send SMS via any local WiFi connection without any use of an app.

Singtel's Consumer Chief Executive Officer Yuen Kuan Moon said this would be help consumers avail call and text services in difficult to reach places.

Our customers can now have mobile coverage even in difficult to reach places such as basements and windowless rooms, as long as there is a WiFi signal. This service extends our extensive mobile network to cover a wider footprint and complements our ongoing efforts in delivering the fastest and widest 4G service in Singapore,” Yuen said.

All calls will switch seamlessly to the 4G network when users move out of WiFi hotspot coverage.

WiFi calling is be available on selected iPhone, Samsung and Sony Xperia smartphone models. The telco is planning to roll out the service in other phone models in the coming weeks.

Singtel has also recently debuted its new mobile data add-on, Data x3, allowing consumers to enjoy triple the mobile data allowance on their plans, for just S$9.90 a month.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
