ComfortDelGro waives taxi rents for a month

Total relief package for drivers could amount to $99m.

ComfortDelGro will waive rental fee for all its drivers until 5 May, according to a statement. This will supplant the extension of daily rental relief, which will be back after 5 May.

The total relief package for ComfortDelGro cabbies is expected to cost up to $99m with the full rental waiver costing the company an additional $19m.

Other taxi operators are expected to offer similar aid to their cabbies as 14% of the drivers or about 2,600 vehicles remain unhired. Taxi drivers’ earnings have earnings plunged 50-60% since the pandemic struck Singapore.

The move follows the announcement by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong that workplaces for non-essential services and schools will remain closed for a month to stem the spread of COVID-19.
