ST Engineering's US shipyard to build two tugs

Contract valued over S$29mln will construct tugs over nest 16 months for Overseas Shipholding Group.

ST Engineering announced April 1 that its US shipyard VT Halter Marine Inc (VT Halter Marine), has signed a contract with subsidiaries of Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc. (OSG) to build two 8,000 ATB tugs worth over US$21 million (S$29.33 million) . VT Halter Marine is the US operation of ST Engineering's marine arm, ST Marine.

The tugs will be built over 16 months at VT Halter Marine's Moss Point Marine shipyard with deliveries expected in the second and third quarters of 2011. Measuring 42.8 metres by 11.6 metres each, these two state-of-the-art tugs will be used to perform articulated tug barge (ATB) services, transporting refined petroleum products coastwise within the US and will have all the necessary capabilities to operate in full ocean service.

VT Halter Marine is one of the leading designers and builders of double-hulled integrated tug/barge units for compliance with the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 in the US. The company has delivered ten ATBs to various customers over the last three years.

Last year, VT Halter Marine was awarded contracts from OSG to undertake the outfitting and commissioning of two 350,000 barrel ATBs which are the largest ATBs built by VT Halter Marine.

"This third contract reaffirms OSG's confidence in VT Halter Marine's proven capability and extensive experience as a leading designer and builder of ATBs and is a strong testimony of our partnership with OSG." ~ CHANG Cheow Teck, President, ST Marine

This contract is not expected to have any material impact on the consolidated net tangible assets per share and earnings per share of ST Engineering for the current financial year.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

If you've been wondering whether SBR could work for your company — yes, probably.

A lot of the companies we partner with started as readers. They'd been following our coverage for a while, saw their own customers and competitors in it, and eventually asked the obvious question: could we do something with you? The answer is usually yes. The shape of it depends on what you're trying to do.

The options are broader than most people assume — thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. Some partners use one channel; most use a mix. We figure out the right combination by starting with your brief, not with our rate card.

So if the question has been on your mind, here's the easy way to ask it.

We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how. It's a better use of everyone's time.
