Fluence Corporation earns win at SBR International Business Awards 2024

Its PS3 wastewater treatment plant is noteworthy for its small footprint, low energy consumption, and strict adherence to international discharge effluence requirements.

Wastewater treatment solutions provider Fluence Corporation was lauded at the recently held SBR International Business Awards 2024 as the winner in the Engineering category for the successful launch of its PS3 sewage treatment plant in July 2023, which represents a groundbreaking endeavour in wastewater management.

Located in Sihanouk City, the PS3 sewage treatment plant has a daily treating capacity of 20,000 cubic metres. The plant uses a bubbleless biofilm technology called Membrane Aerated Bioreactor (MABR) which allows for a highly effective transfer of oxygen to microorganisms, enabling a single-pass odourless process with simultaneous nitrification and denitrification of ammonia to nitrites/nitrates to nitrous gas. The enhanced oxygen transfer efficiency contributes to lower energy consumption, consistent effluent quality, small footprint and simple operation and maintenance, as compared to traditional wastewater treatment methods.

Moreover, with an average electricity consumption per ton of 0.145 kWh/t, it demonstrates a remarkable commitment that aligns with sustainability goals and reflects a conscious effort to operate the wastewater treatment plant in an environmentally responsible manner.

Beyond its size and energy efficiency, the PS3 wastewater treatment plant excels in meeting stringent discharge effluence requirements. The facility is engineered to adhere to the highest environmental standards, ensuring that treated wastewater not only meets but exceeds regulatory guidelines.

In a landmark development, the Partnership in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) network of local governments has unanimously adopted the Preah Sihanouk Declaration. This declaration reaffirms the collective commitment of the entities to pursuing a 'Blue Economy' in the region.

The concept of 'Blue Economy' is centred on the renewable use of ocean resources, and Fluence's PS3 project aligns seamlessly with this vision as the implementation of advanced technologies and environmentally conscious practices allows the facility to not only treat wastewater effectively but also contribute to the broader goal of creating an economy that prioritises the sustainable utilisation of marine resources.
