CPI up 4.5% in May 2011

Blame it on higher costs of housing, transport and food.

According to the Department of Statistics, housing cost rose by 8.1 percent compared with May 2010, as a result of higher accommodation costs and electricity tariffs.

Meanwhile higher prices of cars and petrol contributed to a 7.5 percent increase in transport cost.

Food prices went up by 2.8 percent, as a result of dearer prepared meals, seafood, meat & poultry, dairy products & egg as well as vegetables.

The consumer price index in January-May 2011 moved up by 4.9 percent compared with the same period last year.
