Nearly eight in 10 Singaporeans flag surging Lunar New Year costs
A survey reveals that 26% of givers plan to increase ang bao outlays.
The majority of Singaporeans (77%) think Lunar New Year celebrations are becoming more expensive each year, according to an eToro survey.
Amongst those giving ang baos, 26% plan to enclose more money this year than in 2025.
Overall, around four in five (74%) of respondents intend to give ang baos, with 20% giving $50 to $100 per red packet and 31% giving $10 to $19.
Meanwhile, the report revealed that parents tend to give larger amounts to their children, with 47% planning $50 to $100 and 27% more than $101.
Ang baos for nieces and nephews were generally smaller, with 27% giving $10 to $19, 27% giving $20 to $29, and 20% giving $50 to $100.
Views on when unmarried adults should stop receiving ang baos varied, with 30% suggesting over 40 years old and 24% suggesting 30 to 35 years old.
In addition, 69% do not consider including an auspicious ‘8’ in ang baos mandatory.
The survey was conducted amongst 1,000 Singaporeans who celebrate the festival.
