Singapore remains confident in China’s future, seeks deeper collaboration amid challenges: SM Lee

The joint projects between the two countries will boost development and innovation

Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong reaffirmed Singapore's confidence in China’s future and the importance of bilateral collaborations during the Suzhou Industrial Park's (SIP) 30th Anniversary.

The Singaporean leader reflected on the enduring partnership between the two nations, highlighting SIP as a model for government-to-government collaboration that has delivered mutual benefits and strengthened ties over three decades.

Senior Minister Loong emphasised China’s adaptability and strategic reforms as critical to its resilience and ongoing economic success, noting Singapore’s optimism about China’s ability to navigate global uncertainties and drive progress.

“After nearly half a century of rapid progress, China is facing very different challenges from when it first started its journey of reform and opening up. For domestic reasons alone, China’s growth will likely be slower than before,” he said.

He acknowledged the challenges faced during SIP’s early stages, including cultural differences and divergent practices, but stressed that overcoming these hurdles built trust and set the foundation for future initiatives. Singapore, he stated, remains committed to deepening partnerships that enhance shared growth and development.

Looking ahead, Senior Minister Lee highlighted the broader success of joint projects such as the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City and the Chongqing Connectivity Initiative. These ventures underscore the potential for bilateral cooperation to address pressing global challenges, including sustainable development, innovation, and regional connectivity.

He expressed Singapore's dedication to working closely with China to seize opportunities in emerging fields, reaffirming the significance of the two nations' partnership in fostering innovation and addressing common goals.

In closing, Senior Minister Lee praised the achievements of the Suzhou Industrial Park as a testament to the strength of the Singapore-China relationship and expressed confidence in its continued growth.

He concluded by reaffirming Singapore’s commitment to collaborating with China to build a sustainable and prosperous future.
