Energy supply secure amidst Middle East tensions: Tan See Leng
Gas supplies delivered via pipelines remain unaffected by the conflict.
Singapore’s energy supply remains secure despite rising global oil and gas prices linked to the tensions in the Middle East, according to Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng.
About half of the country’s gas supply comes from piped natural gas, which will not be affected by disruptions linked to the conflict, Tan said in a video posted on social media.
“We import gas supplies from diverse sources beyond the Middle East, including countries like Australia and the US,” he added.
Singapore also maintains fuel stockpiles, whilst power plants can switch from natural gas to diesel as needed.
However, Tan said rising global energy prices will likely push up electricity prices in the coming months.
Households will receive additional support through 1.5 times the regular U-Save rebates this year, amounting to up to $570 to help offset higher electricity costs.
“All of us can help offset these increases through energy conservation and by using more energy-efficient appliances,” he noted.
The minister added that the government is monitoring the situation closely and will continue efforts to diversify energy sources to strengthen supply security.
