42% of tech companies are recruiting from unrelated sectors to address talent crunch

Some tech companies source their reskilled workers from the manufacturing sector.

Over four in 10 (42%) of tech companies are bolstering their workforce by reskilling recruits from unrelated sectors, a study by Equinix has found.

Most tech companies are sourcing their reskilled workers from the administration and business support (40%), manufacturing (23%), and finance and insurance (22%) sectors.

Some are also recruiting and reskilling those returning to work after a period of absence (21%).

Reskilled workers are often tasked to do cloud computing (45%) or take on the role of an IT technician (46%) or data analyst (30%).

Apart from unrelated sectors, companies are also recruiting through higher education and apprenticeship programs.

Companies mainly explore collaborative training programs with higher education institutes (46%), offering student internships (37%), taking part in university career fairs (32%) and partnering on degree apprenticeships (32%).
