4 in 10 Singaporeans refuse to go the extra mile

Are you a stagnating employee?

In its research, global management consultancy Hay Group said that global firms’ performance continues to be stunted, with more than a third of employees across the world unwilling and unable to go the extra mile for their organisation.

In Asia, engagement has stagnated at 63 per cent, although this represents a minor rise of one percentage point over the last 12 months. Singapore performed marginally lower than the Asia average, at 62 per cent.

Europe and Pacific face the greatest threat from employee disengagement, with engagement levels falling to a five-year low of just 63 per cent of the workforce. In the Middle East, engagement has stagnated at 64 per cent, with no change since the height of recession in 2008.

Dr Choo explained, “Over the past five years, Singapore and most parts of Asia have been experiencing relatively strong economic growth compared to Europe and the United States. With most international organisations depending on Asia to achieve their global financial targets, this has given rise to employees working harder and longer in this region.

The stagnated employee engagement results in Singapore point to an overwhelming focus by business leaders on short-term results and not long-term sustainability. To stem the decline in employee engagement levels, Singapore leaders must give more respect to their employees’ need for a healthier work-life balance and recognition for their hard work.

Winning the minds and hearts of all employees will be a key competitive advantage for Singaporean companies to succeed in this Asian century.”
