Manpower ministry fines renovation company over safety lapses

There was poor management of work activities at the Eng Kong Terrace, MOM said.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) issued $8,000 fines against the renovation company over several workplace safety and health lapses.

It stemmed from a public post that there is an unsafe working-at-height carried out on the roof of a 2-storey shophouse in Eng Kong Terrace, according to the ministry’s Facebook post.

After inspection, MOM found that there was also poor management of work activities and there were no esential documents such as Risk Assessment, Safe Work Procedures, Fall Prevention Plan, and Scaffold Register.

The renovation firm also received an order to halt construction activities on the site.

“It was clear from our inspection that the safety of the workers was not a priority for J & C Renovation Enterprise. Thankfully, a member of public alerted MOM on an unsafe act at the worksite, and we were able to intervene swiftly and take immediate action,” said Sebastian Tan, Director, at MOM’s Occupational safety and Health Inspectorate.
