BHP to open first industry AI hub in Singapore

It will use AI to tackle key challenges and enhance safety.

Global mining giant BHP will set up its first industry AI hub in Singapore this month to accelerate digital transformation and AI adoption across its global mining operations.

The hub will focus on using AI to solve company-wide challenges, improve safety, and boost productivity. It is also expected to drive greater integration of data, automation, and AI into BHP’s core operations.

Backed by Enterprise Singapore and developed with AI Singapore (AISG), the hub will strengthen BHP’s digital capabilities in the region.  Singapore was chosen for its strong innovation ecosystem and digital infrastructure.

"The Hub will support the growth of BHP’s digital capabilities in Singapore and the region, with plans for a number of AI specialists to lead collaboration between BHP teams and local AI partners to solve business problems," the group said.

The move builds on BHP’s existing use of AI in areas like procurement and financial forecasting.

The miner has already saved 3 billion litres of water and 118 GWh of energy since FY22 through AI-powered plant control at its Escondida copper mine in Chile.

More projects and partnerships are expected as the hub expands.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

If you've been wondering whether SBR could work for your company — yes, probably.

A lot of the companies we partner with started as readers. They'd been following our coverage for a while, saw their own customers and competitors in it, and eventually asked the obvious question: could we do something with you? The answer is usually yes. The shape of it depends on what you're trying to do.

The options are broader than most people assume — thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. Some partners use one channel; most use a mix. We figure out the right combination by starting with your brief, not with our rate card.

So if the question has been on your mind, here's the easy way to ask it.

We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how. It's a better use of everyone's time.
