Meta tightens safeguards against scams for WhatsApp, Messenger in Singapore

Meta apps can prohibit screen sharing and detect suspicious messages, amongst others.

Meta recently introduced new anti-scam features on WhatsApp and Messenger in Singapore, after it removed 650,000 scam-related ads in the city-state in the first half of 2025.

WhatsApp users in Singapore will now receive an on-screen alert during a video call if they attempt to share their screen with someone outside their saved contacts, preventing scammers from accessing sensitive information.

On Messenger, enhanced scam detection will notify users if they receive a suspicious message from an unknown sender and allow them to submit recent chat messages for AI review.

Users will be able to further secure their Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp accounts with passkeys, privacy and security checkup tools, strong passwords, two-factor authentication or two-step verification, and controls for who can see their information.

In the first half of 2025, Meta took action against nearly 12 million scam-linked accounts globally, it said.

Meta Singapore also recently participated in the Infocomm Media Development Authority’s Digital for Life Festival that aimed to educate parents and youth on how to recognise scams and practice online safety.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
