MAS, banks test quantum key distribution to strengthen financial cybersecurity
It can securely transfer sensitive data.
The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), together with DBS, HSBC, OCBC, UOB, SPTel, and SpeQtral, has completed a proof-of-concept sandbox testing quantum key distribution (QKD) for secure financial communications.
The initiative follows a memorandum of understanding signed in August 2024 to explore quantum-safe technologies in financial services.
The sandbox validated that QKD can securely transfer sensitive data and highlighted its potential to protect communication networks, including connections between data centres and bank premises.
The exercise also identified areas needing improvement, such as stronger security standards, better interoperability between QKD providers, and the need for senior management support and dedicated resources for quantum-safe initiatives.
MAS Chief Technology Officer Vincent Loy said, “The QKD sandbox is a major step in testing quantum-safe solutions. The insights gained help strengthen Singapore’s financial sector against future cybersecurity threats from quantum computing.”
