About 42% Singaporeans 'watch' every dollar they spend: Qualtrics

Meanwhile, 56% of Singaporeans bought cheaper brands amidst the pandemic on purpose.

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected consumer spending habits in Singapore, as illustrated by the findings of customer experience expert Qualtrics in a recently released research, with 42% of Singaporeans watching every dollar they were spending and 56% agreeing to have bought cheaper brands amidst the pandemic on purpose.

Concurrently, 57% of respondents said they were more likely to purchase items on promotion, whilst 51% have bought from a variety of brands due to availability.

In the following months, Singaporeans would likely spend more on food items and services, said Qualtrics’ research. Fifty percent of the respondents said they would spend more on takeaways as well as home delivery services, followed by fresh food (42%) and packaged groceries (37%).

Similarly, consumer spend on utility bills and services (47%) as well as cleaning products (35%) would likely rise. However, a majority of Singaporeans also said they would likely spend less on luxury brands and products (60%), entertainment and travel (60%), eating out at restaurants (55%), and alcohol (48%).

Qualtrics surveyed 328 Singaporeans from ages 18 to 65 in early September 2020.
