Just another special occasion? How Singaporeans view Father’s Day

Some middle-aged Singaporeans are skeptical.

Whilst the majority of Singaporeans see Father’s Day as a proper special occasion, some sceptics from the age group of 45 to 54 years old said it is celebrated as a commercialised event, a YouGov survey showed.

Within the age group, 48% of Singaporeans see the occasion as a way for brands to promote their product to the public, 41% of Singaporeans said it is celebrated more as it is a proper occasion and 11% said they don’t know.

For the whole of Singapore, 46% of residents believed that Father’s Day is a proper occasion, 43% said it is being used for commercialisation and 10% said they have no idea.

Majority of those who said Father’s Day is a proper occasion are from the younger adults, with 56% of those aged 18 to 24 years old and 53% of those aged 25 to 34 years old feeling that the event is celebrated on its own terms.

Over 19,000 people in 18 markets were interviewed in the YouGov survey studying the behaviour towards Father’s Day. Out of 19,000, four in nine said the day is celebrated because it is a proper special occasion whilst 43% said the event is a result of pressure from commercial firms.
