Popular ways to pay in Singapore [Chart from Adyen]

Singapore retailers slow to adopt self-checkout

Less than two in 10 retailers offer such feature.

Five in 10 shoppers in Singapore want more retailers to offer self-checkout options, data from Adyen showed.

This preference is likely driven by their expectation for a fast and easy checkout online and in-store.

Retailers, however, are falling behind in providing shoppers with such an experience.

Data for Adyen showed that only 18% of retailers offer self-checkout, whilst 21% have mobile point-of-sale solutions.

Online payment experiences are also falling short, with just 19% of Singaporean retailers
supporting one-click checkouts.

Less than three in 10 also accept digital wallets, whilst only 16% support Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) online and in-store.

Adyen highlighted that nowadays, it's not only cash being set aside in some markets; physical cards are also becoming obsolete, with 31% of consumers ditching wallets in favour of phone payments.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
