Singtel launches 50Gbps fibre trial in Singapore for future demand

According to Singtel, 50Gbps broadband could enable a range of home use cases, including 8K and future 12K video streaming.

Singtel has launched a technical trial of 50Gbps XGS-PON fibre broadband, describing it as the first such trial in Singapore, as part of its efforts to prepare its fixed network for future data-intensive use cases.

In a statement, Singtel said the trial is intended to help homes and businesses get ready for AI-enabled applications and other emerging technologies that are expected to become more widespread over the next three to five years.

The company said the trial will assess network performance and capabilities needed to support AI-enabled, multi-device environments, as a step toward potential future mass deployment for both residential and commercial customers.

Singtel linked the initiative to rising global demand for bandwidth, driven by ultra-high-definition video streaming, immersive media, cloud-based applications, and AI-driven home systems.

According to Singtel, 50Gbps broadband could enable a range of home use cases, including 8K and future 12K video streaming, augmented and virtual reality experiences, cloud gaming, and cloud-based personal computers with low latency, and data-intensive remote work or home business operations.

It also highlighted potential applications in telemedicine, such as real-time medical imaging and virtual reality-based physiotherapy, as well as AI-driven smart homes that rely on real-time analytics across cameras, sensors, and connected devices.

The company said higher-capacity broadband could also support future-ready home networks designed for next-generation Wi-Fi, dense Internet of Things deployments, and new forms of AI-generated entertainment.

It also pointed to its broader network investments, including nationwide standalone 5G deployment in 2022, subsequent use of 700MHz spectrum to improve coverage, and its recent launch of network slicing to support a cloud gaming service.
