Lucky 13: Additional train cars eyed for Bukit Panjang LRT

The 13 additional cars would provide additional capacity of about 50%.

In a news release the Land Transport Authority said it is working with SMRT, the operator for the Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit system, to purchase an additional 13 train cars for the LRT system.

According to LTA, headways between Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Panjang LRT stations will be reduced from the current 2.5 minutes to 2.2 minutes, and headways for the loop between Petir and Senja stations (in both directions) will be reduced from 5 minutes to 4.4 minutes.

SMRT currently runs the maximum of 18 out of the 19 cars during the morning peak hours. During the evening peak, the LRT services are scheduled to match the arrival timings of MRT services at Choa Chu Kang.

The additional train cars will be put into service from 2014 onwards.
