Contract is for on-train passenger information systems for Concessao Metroviaria Do Rio De Janeiro.

ST Engineering on Monday announced that its electronics arm, ST Electronics, has been awarded a contract worth about S$4.6m by Changchun Railway Vehicles Co Ltd (CRC). ST Electronics will provide the Passenger Information Systems (PIS) for the Rio De Janeiro metro vehicles, a project awarded to CRC by Concessao Metroviaria Do Rio De Janeiro SA, according to an ST Engineering report.

The PIS will be installed in 19 trains, with a total of 114 cars. The PIS will enhance passenger travel experience through the provision of comprehensive real-time audio and multimedia information via its computerised public announcement and digital display sub-systems. Work on the project commences immediately and will be completed by the end of 2014. ST Electronics will design, manufacture and commission the PIS for the project with contribution from its wholly owned subsidiary in Shanghai, China.

"We are delighted to be awarded yet another project to deliver PIS systems to CRC for their foreign customers. This contract, amongst the several others awarded earlier, are clear indications that the continuing efforts in building up our rail electronics design and production capabilities in China has enabled us to work closely and cost-effectively with important partners like CRC," said Lee Fook Sun, President, ST Electronics.

ST Electronics has been awarded projects by CRC and other partners for delivery in both China and for export which include projects for the Singapore Downtown Line metro vehicles, the Saudi Mashaaser Mass Rapid Transit in Saudi Arabia, and in Asia.
