STT GDC launches AI test bed to trial HVDC efficiency

The facility on Jurong Island uses solid-state transformers to cut energy loss.

ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) has launched the FutureGrid Accelerator, a high-voltage direct current (HVDC)-powered artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure testbed.

The accelerator is described as ‘Southeast Asia’s first’ live HVDC-powered AI infrastructure testbed, according to a press release. It is located at Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU Singapore) Electrification and Power Grids Centre on Jurong Island.

The initiative was jointly developed by STT GDC and LITEON, with support from the Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N) and NTU spin-off Amperesand.

The testbed is designed to demonstrate the integration of HVDC systems with live AI workloads. It will validate HVDC performance at power loads of at least 325kW using current-generation AI servers.

The environment incorporates LITEON’s data centre reference architecture with Amperesand’s solid state transformer technology.

Separately, STT GDC signed memoranda of understanding with the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore Polytechnic, NTU Singapore, and the National University of Singapore.

The partnerships aim to provide industry-aligned training in AI infrastructure and sustainable energy systems for 8,000 Singaporeans over five years.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

If you've been wondering whether SBR could work for your company — yes, probably.

A lot of the companies we partner with started as readers. They'd been following our coverage for a while, saw their own customers and competitors in it, and eventually asked the obvious question: could we do something with you? The answer is usually yes. The shape of it depends on what you're trying to do.

The options are broader than most people assume — thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. Some partners use one channel; most use a mix. We figure out the right combination by starting with your brief, not with our rate card.

So if the question has been on your mind, here's the easy way to ask it.

We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how. It's a better use of everyone's time.
