Singapore suffers shortage of qualified eye surgeons as foreign doctors remain limited

Strict government accreditation of foreign doctors continues to limit expatriate competition in Singapore, despite the rising demand in ophthalmology practice due to susceptible populations.

According to a report by Maybank Kim Eng, demand for specialist treatment of eye disorders can only grow, stimulated by the following: susceptible populations, the inevitable cataract, and not enough qualified eye surgeons.

The more the vision of the aged dims, the more the demand for eyecare treatment. The ageing of Malaysia’s and Singapore’s populations should drive demand for eyecare professionals. Also, while eye procedures such as Lasik are usually elective, cataracts are not.

Despite strong projected demand, Malaysia and Singapore are underserved by qualified ophthalmologists, according to industry researcher, Frost & Sullivan.
