Batam–SG subsea cable to add over 1.6 Pb/s of data capacity

The project forms plans to develop BBK as a digital hub.

The Nongsa–Changi submarine cable is expected to add more than 1.6 petabits per second of data capacity between Singapore and Batam, Indonesia, according to Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong.

The cable will provide latency of under two milliseconds, Gan said at the project’s landing ceremony on 20 July.

“It will support the growth of data centres and digital services in Batam, and help businesses operate across borders,” he added.

The project forms part of the two governments’ plans to develop Batam, Bintan and Karimun, collectively known as BBK, into a digital hub.

Singapore and Indonesia have agreed to conduct a joint study to identify investment opportunities and produce recommendations for BBK’s technology sector.

The initiative follows discussions between Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at their leaders’ retreat earlier in July.

Gan said companies could build teams and operations across Singapore and Batam whilst serving customers in Southeast Asia and other markets.

“This is why Nongsa Digital Park’s role as a digital bridge between our countries is so relevant,” he added.

The project was developed by BW Digital, Telin, and their partners.
