Gov’t recommends 10 key reforms for platform workers protection
Operators must notify the MoM if they suspect a worker is allowing a foreigner to misuse their account.
The government has introduced 10 new recommendations by the Platform Workers Trilateral Group to better protect workers from illegal foreign competition and unsafe working conditions.
The recommendations target two key concerns, including unauthorised activities that undercut local workers’ earnings and incentive structures that encourage unsafe working practices.
This includes requiring platform operators to notify the Ministry of Manpower if they suspect a worker is allowing a foreigner to misuse their account.
If an offence is established under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act, that worker will be banned by all platform operators for a minimum of 24 months.
For illegal ride-hailing services, the government will increase penalties and disrupt matching services by taking down apps, channels, and advertisements.
Moreover, food delivery platforms will conduct more frequent identity verification checks and require outsourcing companies to submit work pass documentation for foreign workers.
