M1 inks deal with Nokia to boost cloud-based IoT platform

The platform is integrated with cybersecurity technologies to secure IoT devices and data.

M1 announced its agreement with Nokia to leverage on the latter’s IMPACT Internet of Things (IoT) platform which will boost M1’s capabilities to provide IoT solutions in Singapore as part of its move to enhance Smart City solutions, an announcement revealed.

The telco is reportedly one of the first companies in Asia Pacific to use Nokia’s IMPACT IoT platform which supports narrowband (NB) IoT and other low range protocols that provide low-power wide-area (LPWA) options for the connection of IoT devices. The platform also features a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) layer which aims to provide a suite of capabilities covering connectivity management, application enablement, and device management for enterprise and solution providers.

“The IMPACT platform is designed to help customers build and deploy a broad array of IoT applications, including Smart Cities,” Nokia Software’s president Bhaskar Gorti said in a statement. “Our goal is to help cities provide innovative digital services that improve the quality of lives.”

According to M1, the platform is able to perform crucial data collection, event processing, contextualisation and analytics at scale whilst enabling applications across all devices without geographic conditions. Additionally, the platform is integrated with cybersecurity technologies such as Nokia NetGuard to secure IoT devices and data.

“These are essential for the management of the thousands of sensors and devices to be deployed in Smart Cities,” M1 explained in a statement, adding how the deployment will strengthen the firm’s capabilities to support businesses in developing an efficient and reliable IoT ecosystem in Singapore and overseas.

In 2017, M1 rolled out a handful of Smart City initiatives such as energy metering, smart street lightings, fleet management, logistics and waste management. In the same year, M1 and Nokia deployed a nationwide commercial NB-IoT network which aimed to catalyse smart solutions innovation. In 2018, it also partnered with Nokia to conduct its first 5G small cell trial in Southeast Asia in its push for speedier networks.
