Daily Briefing: Singapore mulls buying F-35 jets; Jardine C&C nears 52-week low

And here's how you can prepare for the transition to cashless payments.

The Singapore government is "seriously evaluating" a future purchase of F-35 jets, the head of Lockheed Martin Corp's international business said on Thursday.

"They, I think, are seriously evaluating the F-35, as well as other platforms I'm sure," Lockheed International Executive Vice President Rick Edwards told Reuters at the Singapore Airshow. "When they are ready we will respond."

He said initial discussions with the government centred on the F-35B version short take-off and landing variant, which he described as "a nice fit for a smaller land-constrained environment".

The government seems pretty determined to turn Singapore into a cashless society, and has announced that the public transport system will go fully cashless by 2020… which is less than three years away, and probably less time than it’ll take your BTO flat to get built.

Jardine Cycle & Carriage announced in December last year that it had increased its stake in Vietnam-listed Refrigeration Electrical Engineering Corporation from 23.6% to 23.9%. It forked out close to US$2m for the purchase.

The acquisition came after another investment in the country. In November that year, the conglomerate invested US$1.2 billion for a 10% stake in Vietnam Dairy Products Joint Stock Company (Vinamilk), a leading dairy producer in Vietnam with a market share of approximately 58%. Vinamilk is still majority-owned by a Vietnamese state shareholder.
