SBS Transit’s bus captain fatigue monitoring system wins at Singapore Business Review Technology Excellence Awards 2026

The company earned recognition for improving bus safety through real-time fatigue detection technology.

SBS Transit has won the Emerging Technology - Transportation award in the Singapore Business Review Technology Excellence Awards 2026 for its fatigue monitoring system, Golden Eye.

Golden Eye is an AI-powered system that uses machine vision to detect signs of fatigue or distraction in Bus Captains, such as yawning or closing their eyes. It then alerts them in real time through audio, visual, and haptic alerts, such as seat vibrations, to bring their attention back to driving. This enables Bus Captains to stay alert and focused on the road at all times.

Golden Eye was first trialled in 2019 on 30 buses over a six-month period. A second trial in 2021 introduced structured coaching sessions led by Interchange Managers, alongside system alerts, to reinforce safe driving habits and address the root causes of fatigue. The trials recorded over a 50% reduction in fatigue- and distraction-related cases when the system was active. This combined approach of technology and staff engagement led to sustained behavioural improvements and fewer potential safety incidents.

Following these positive results, SBS Transit expanded the deployment of Golden Eye to around 1,000 buses in 2025, about one-third of its fleet. Further enhancements include new detection features, such as identifying when the Bus Captain is not in the cabin, amongst others.

Moving forward, SBS Transit plans to explore the integration of the Golden Eye system with the bus Operations Control Centre, enabling closer monitoring and immediate intervention when Bus Captains do not respond to alerts. This supports faster incident management and strengthens overall safety oversight.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
