OpenAI to establish Asia-Pacific hub in Singapore

Singaporeans are among the highest per capita users of ChatGPT worldwide.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, will open an office in Singapore by late 2024, serving as its Asia-Pacific hub.

The company has begun building a team in Singapore to support customers and partners throughout the APAC region.

Singaporeans are among the highest per capita users of ChatGPT worldwide, with the number of weekly active users in Singapore doubling since the beginning of the year.

OpenAI said having a presence in Singapore will allow it to work more closely with local government partners, such as the Economic Development Board (EDB), to support Singapore’s local AI ecosystem.

As part of Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0, Digital Industry Singapore, which comprises EDB, ESG, and IMDA, is fostering collaboration between AI innovators and Singapore-based enterprises to drive productivity and growth.

Meanwhile, OpenAI has announced a partnership with AI Singapore to make advanced AI more widely accessible across Southeast Asia, providing up to US$1m to help develop resources, including open datasets, ensuring AI models are better suited to Southeast Asia's diverse languages and cultures.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

If you've been wondering whether SBR could work for your company — yes, probably.

A lot of the companies we partner with started as readers. They'd been following our coverage for a while, saw their own customers and competitors in it, and eventually asked the obvious question: could we do something with you? The answer is usually yes. The shape of it depends on what you're trying to do.

The options are broader than most people assume — thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. Some partners use one channel; most use a mix. We figure out the right combination by starting with your brief, not with our rate card.

So if the question has been on your mind, here's the easy way to ask it.

We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how. It's a better use of everyone's time.
