Chart of the Day: Industrial production contracted 7.4% in May

The contraction is attributed to the circuit breaker measures implemented.

This chart from UOB shows that Singapore’s industrial production contracted 7.4% YoY in May, marking its first contraction in three months. This compares to market expectation for an expansion of 7.7% YoY.

The contraction is attributed to the circuit breaker measures which spanned across the entire month of May.

Manufacturing momentum fell in the transport engineering cluster with a drop of 40.7%, led especially by the aerospace segment with a 30.1% fall as airlines grounded aircraft in response to the travel restrictions.

Circuit Breaker measures, as well as lower oil prices, also negatively impacted the marine & offshore engineering segment, which plunged 55.1% as employees were unable to carry out work during May.

Lacklustre export demand had also dragged the general manufacturing segment and the chemicals segment which decreased 26.9% and 13.5%, respectively.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
