Keppel secures 720 MW Australian site for AI campuses
It obtained exclusive rights to a massive 123-hectare site southeast of Melbourne.
Keppel Ltd. expanded its pipeline of data centre powerbank after securing 720 megawatts (MW) of capacity from Australian energy and infrastructure landowner Lightwood Group Pty Ltd.
In a statement, the company said this acquisition increased its capacity from more than 300 MW to over 1.0 gigawatts of gross power capacity in the Asia Pacific.
Keppel’s Connectivity Division secured the rights to lease a 123-hectare contiguous site near Morwell, Victoria, in phases and over time. Keppel will pay Lightwood an annual access fee to gain early access to the site for pre-development works, including obtaining planning approvals and contracting power and water, before its private data centre funds take up long-term leases.
The site is located within the proposed Gippsland Renewable Energy Zone, southeast of Melbourne City. Zoned to allow data centre development, the site also benefits from existing water infrastructure and proximity to intercity dark fibre networks, which will enable high-performance connectivity to Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.
“The site near Morwell offers significant scalability, with clear pathways to securing competitively priced green power, non-potable water for cooling, and low-latency fibre connectivity, making it a compelling location to site next-generation AI campuses,” said Manjot Singh Mann, CEO of Connectivity, Keppel.
Lee Hui Fang, deputy CIO of Data Centres, Keppel, said powerbanking enhances the company’s pipeline of proprietary data centre development projects and supports the growth of Keppel’s Funds under Management (FUM).
“Our latest vintage, Keppel Data Centre Fund III, continues to gain strong traction with global institutional investors, with its FUM exceeding $2.7 b,” she said.
Keppel manages and operates 39 data centres with a total gross power capacity of over 800 MW across Asia Pacific and Europe, including projects under development.
