Long weekends drive short-stay travel across Asia: report

Accommodation searches rose 80% MoM over Hari Raya long weekend.

Long weekends are fueling a surge in short-term travel across Asia, according to digital travel platform Agoda.

Ahead of the Hari Raya long weekend, Agoda recorded an 80% month-on-month increase in accommodation searches from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore. Top destinations included Japan, Thailand, China, South Korea, and Taiwan.

A similar trend was observed in Thailand during the Songkran long weekend, with travelers favoring Hong Kong, Osaka, Shanghai, and Seoul. In Vietnam, the recent Liberation Day and Labor Day holidays saw Bangkok, Singapore, Tokyo, and Seoul emerge as the most searched destinations.

More long weekends are expected across the rest of the year in Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.

"The opportunity for hotels and airlines to secure bookings and incentivize travelers to extend their trips and add ancillary items to boost revenue over long weekends has never been greater,” Andrew Smith, senior vice president of Supply at Agoda said.

“Hotels should ensure they are using the right data to target the hottest consumers from across the Asia Pacific region and ensure that their service offerings are tailored to their regional tastes. For example, catering for visitors with large families by ensuring they are able to access larger and joined rooms for family travel,” Smith added.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.
