US-based Reddit fails to block ‘Reddio’ trademark in IPOS ruling
The ruling found that the two marks were “more dissimilar than similar.”
US-based social media company Reddit Inc has failed to block Reddio Pte Ltd from registering the “Reddio” trademark, after the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) dismissed its opposition.
The IPOS ruled that Reddio may proceed with the registration of its mark for software and blockchain-related services under Class 42, rejecting Reddit’s claims of similarity and potential confusion.
The social media firm argued that “Reddio” was visually, aurally, and conceptually similar to its existing trademarks and could mislead the public into believing both brands were connected.
In addition, the company relied on provisions under Singapore’s Trade Marks Act relating to likelihood of confusion, well-known marks, and passing off.
However, the adjudicator found that the marks were more dissimilar than similar overall, citing differences in spelling, pronunciation, and impression.
IPOS further held that Reddit did not establish that its trademarks were “well known” in Singapore for the opposition, citing insufficient evidence of strong local recognition.
The opposition was dismissed on all grounds, and the trademark application will proceed to registration. The applicant was awarded costs of $11,726.50.
