MPA enlists tech leaders to digitise the maritime sector

One of MPA's partners is Amazon Web Services.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) forged partnerships with industry giants to accelerate the maritime industry's digital transformation, including Amazon Web Services (AWS).

MPA will tap AWS' services, including cloud, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital twins, to enhance the maritime industry’s efficiency, safety, and sustainability outcomes.

MPA and AWS will also develop maritime Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI–ML) to allow the industry to pilot AI and generative AI (GenAI) capabilities on the Green and Digital Shipping Corridors.

The government will also tap into the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative to help minimise the cost and time required to acquire and analyse large sustainability datasets.

MPA will also hold several activities to develop the maritime industry’s AI capabilities, with the first training set by the end of 2024.

MPA also signed an MoU with S&P Market Intelligence and Bunkerchain to use the Port of Singapore for the pilot testing of the digital ship identity in maritime applications like digital port clearance and digital bunkering.

MPA is also developing an AI-enabled Next Generation Vessel Traffic Management System (NGVTMS) to accommodate the traffic volume in hub ports.

Singapore has tapped Tidalis B.V., Kongsberg Norcontrol AS, and Wartsila Singapore Pte. Ltd. to develop prototypes at MPA’s Maritime Innovation Lab 2.0 over the next 15 months.

The system will be based on an open system architecture and have advanced features such as data analytics to identify traffic hotspots and machine learning to predict collisions and enable vessel traffic officers to handle higher volumes and more complex vessel traffic safely.

MPA is also developing a Satellite Resource Management Platform (SRMP) to capture satellite images for time-critical missions.

Meanwhile, MPA worked with Esri Singapore to develop a digital twin proof-of-concept of a methanol bunkering leak incident.

Motion Ventures and PIER71TM, supported by MPA, also launched the Maritime Singapore Startup Ecosystem Map 2024 (Map), showcasing the active Singapore-based MarineTech startups according to their focus areas.

The map will be available on Motion Ventures, PIER71TM and MPA’s websites from 16 April.
