Singapore to invest $100m in 10G broadband network

The Nationwide Broadband Network upgrade starts in mid-2024.

The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) is allocating up to $100m to upgrade its Nationwide Broadband Network to 10 gigabytes per second (Gbps) to support the increasing digitalisation in the country.

In a statement, IMDA noted that a higher-capacity broadband network will serve as the “backbone of future applications and innovations,” noting the fast-evolving digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, immersive digital experiences and autonomous devices.

“A higher-capacity broadband network provides the foundation to enable these future innovations and opportunities. It is important for Singapore to invest ahead in foundational connectivity infrastructure, even as use cases continue to develop and evolve, so as to be future-ready,” IMDA said.

IMDA said the broadband network upgrading will be from mid-2024 to 2026.

The authority expects over half a million households to sign up and benefit from higher speeds of up to 10 Gbps by 2028.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

If you've been wondering whether SBR could work for your company — yes, probably.

A lot of the companies we partner with started as readers. They'd been following our coverage for a while, saw their own customers and competitors in it, and eventually asked the obvious question: could we do something with you? The answer is usually yes. The shape of it depends on what you're trying to do.

The options are broader than most people assume — thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. Some partners use one channel; most use a mix. We figure out the right combination by starting with your brief, not with our rate card.

So if the question has been on your mind, here's the easy way to ask it.

We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how. It's a better use of everyone's time.
