Allianz Insurance Singapore Pte. Ltd. triumphs at Singapore Business Review International Business Awards 2026
The company has been driving the future of mobility by insuring Singapore’s first fully driverless autonomous vehicle.
Allianz Insurance Singapore Pte. Ltd. won the General Insurance accolade at the Singapore Business Review International Business Awards 2026 for becoming the first insurer in Singapore to provide coverage for a fully driverless autonomous vehicle.
The recognition honours the company’s policy supporting the operation of the WeRide Robobus, which operated without a safety operator onboard at Resorts World Sentosa in 2025. The coverage coincided with the historic regulatory approval from the Land Transport Authority, which allowed the Robobus to operate without a safety officer on board.
Whilst traditional motor insurance policies are designed for vehicles with human drivers, autonomous vehicles operate differently. Hence, this requires a new way of assessing risk.
To address this, Allianz developed a bespoke insurance solution that takes into account several factors, such as advanced sensors, safety systems, maintenance standards, and how the vehicle is used.
Allianz also introduced a new risk management approach that includes conducting detailed reviews of the vehicle’s design, engineering, and operational systems before underwriting coverage; using autonomous driving data to monitor performance and identify potential risks; and creating a claims process designed for autonomous vehicle scenarios.
This framework was developed in just six months, a proof of Allianz’s ability to deliver an industry-first solution.
Moreover, Allianz supported uninterrupted operations for the Robobus by ensuring a smooth transition from the previous insurer, whose policy did not cover fully driverless operations. Since its launch, the Robobus has completed thousands of incident-free trips and carried tens of thousands of passengers.
For Allianz Insurance Singapore, the project establishes the company as a trusted partner in emerging mobility technologies. Furthermore, it sets a benchmark for how autonomous vehicles can be insured safely and responsibly.
The insights gained from this initiative are now being shared across the Allianz global network to help other markets develop insurance solutions for autonomous vehicles.
The Robobus is only the beginning for Allianz Insurance Singapore. The insurer has also extended coverage to the Ai.R autonomous fleet, operated by Grab in partnership with WeRide. The Ai.R service has been open for public rides in Punggol since 1 April 2026, and has been operating autonomously with a Safety Operator onboard.
The service will run two routes that respectively measure 10 km and 12 km and it is Singapore’s first autonomous vehicle service in a residential neighbourhood.
Autonomous technology is rapidly changing how people move. By supporting safe deployment and responsible innovation, Allianz Insurance Singapore is helping build a future of smarter, safer, and more sustainable mobility for generations to come.
