Sentosa Development Corporation wins SBR Technology Excellence Awards 2025 for sustainability initiatives

SDC showcases how technology can drive meaningful environmental impact whilst enhancing operational efficiency.

Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) has been recognised with the SBR Technology Excellence Awards 2025 in the Digital - Tourism category for its successful implementation of several innovative technology-focussed sustainability initiatives.

These initiatives demonstrate SDC's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable tourism through digital solutions aimed at reducing environmental impact, enhancing operational efficiency and promoting eco-conscious behaviours.

Key technology-driven initiatives include the “CEO” Challenge, API Gateway, Staff ePass System, Carbon Footprint Calculator, and Digital Business Cards.

The "CEO" Challenge is a gamified digital platform leveraging technology to drive employee engagement in sustainable practices. The system uses a points mechanism to track and reward employees’ eco-friendly actions like recycling, energy saving, and sustainable commuting. This has led to increased staff participation, higher recycling rates, and improved morale.

Next, the API Gateway is a technical infrastructure employing a reusable microservices architecture to enhance system efficiency and scalability. This gateway facilitates seamless integration with Sentosa’s Island Partners' ticketing systems, enabling immediate digital ticket delivery to guests via Sentosa's online channels.

The Staff ePass System is a digital access management solution that replaces traditional plastic identification cards. This technology eliminates plastic waste and simplifies administrative processes, enhancing employee satisfaction through user-friendly access management.

The Carbon Footprint Calculator is a digital tool utilising data-driven algorithms to enable staff, guests, and tour groups to measure their environmental impact from activities like travel, dining, and leisure. The platform provides detailed analytics and actionable sustainability insights to encourage more sustainable choices, whilst also promoting eco-friendly practices, in support of Singapore's national climate goals.

Lastly, SDC’s Digital Business Cards for staff enable QR code-based sharing and real-time information updates for staff. By going digital, the need for energy-intensive printing and plastic waste has been eliminated, contributing to a lower carbon footprint.

SDC aims to further expand these technology-driven programmes, utilising data insights to maximise their impact and inspire similar efforts globally. This recognition from the SBR Technology Excellence Awards highlights Sentosa's position as a leader in sustainable development through the strategic application of technology within the tourism sector.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
