FairPrice ranks lowest in Asian methane and climate disclosure report
Mighty Earth flags FairPrice for its lack of action on methane, a gas 80 times more potent than CO2.
FairPrice, Singapore’s largest supermarket chain, scored zero out of 100 in a new Mighty Earth report assessing methane disclosure and reduction amongst Asia’s top food retailers.
The report, Losing Face: Asian Retailers’ Methane Failure, evaluated eight major retailers, including Singapore’s FairPrice, on whether they publicly track or act to reduce methane, a greenhouse gas over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over 20 years. FairPrice had no separate reporting or targets for methane.
Across Asia, none of the retailers reviewed had publicly available deforestation- or conversion-free policies, despite the contribution of meat and dairy production to emissions. Only AEON and DFI acknowledged methane from livestock or rice cultivation, and only DFI provided financial support for reducing rice-related emissions.
Mighty Earth noted that Asia produces roughly 90% of the world’s rice and is a growing source of beef, yet most major food retailers fail to address methane in their supply chains.
