GIC and Sony Music Publishing acquire 45,000-song catalogue
Blackstone exits catalogue as Sony-GIC venture expands music rights exposure across global assets.
Sony Music Publishing has agreed to acquire the complete music rights portfolio of Recognition Music Group from funds managed by Blackstone, in a transaction supported by GIC, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, through its joint investment venture with Sony Music Group.
According to a company statement, the portfolio includes more than 45,000 songs performed by artists across multiple decades and genres.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The Sony-GIC partnership, unveiled in January, focuses on acquiring and growing music catalog assets across genres and markets. Sony Music Group said the venture targets high-quality music catalog assets across international markets.
Qasim Abbas, Senior Managing Director and Head of Tactical Opportunities International at Blackstone, said the transaction delivers a return for investors and reflects institutional demand for music rights as an asset class.
Ben Katovsky, CEO of Recognition Music Group, said the company managed the catalogue and worked to preserve its value during ownership.
