Singapore raises 2030 solar target to 3 GWp after early success
The government proposes grants to accelerate solar and energy efficiency.
Singapore will raise its 2030 solar deployment target to 3 gigawatt-peak (GWp), following the early achievement of the 2 GWp goal, as discussed during the Singapore Budget 2026.
Jeremy Ong, Senior Manager of LHN Energy and General Manager of LHN Parking, said domestic generation is a key pillar of the energy transition.
He proposed using microfitting to add renewable energy capabilities to urban surfaces, including car parks, walkways, and industrial estates.
Ong also suggested integrating solar power with battery storage and electric vehicle charging. Under this model, energy would be stored in batteries for use during peak demand periods—a concept not yet implemented in any large-scale commercial projects locally.
Yoon Young Kim, Cluster President for Singapore and Brunei at Schneider Electric, noted that grants are necessary as climate momentum slows.
Citing a study by Schneider Electric and the Singapore Exchange, he said companies are increasingly prioritising investment in solar panels, yet awareness of energy-efficiency options remains low despite short payback periods.
“We hope the extension of the grant will encourage companies to explore ways to reduce emissions by lowering or optimising their energy use,” Kim added.
