Singapore, Japan ink five-point partnership to boost AI and trade
One initiative is the development of AI models tailored to local languages and cultures.
Singapore and Japan have upgraded their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, announced by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae on 18 March.
The partnership will cover five key areas, including free trade and economic cooperation, digitalisation and technology, security and defence, green transition and energy, and partnerships and exchanges.
One major initiative is the establishment of an ICT policy dialogue and a review of the memorandum of cooperation on ICT between Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information.
Cooperation on artificial intelligence will be deepened, covering safety, governance, and the development of models tailored to local languages and cultures.
In security and defence, the partnership will strengthen collaboration between operational authorities through bilateral and multilateral exercises, including common platforms, lean-manning concepts, and unmanned systems.
The two countries will also establish frameworks to support net-zero goals, such as the Energy, Sustainability and Climate Change Framework.
The annual Japan-Singapore Policy Dialogue between the Foreign Ministries will also continue to review progress and coordinate further cooperation.
