Gardenia to shift bakery production to Malaysia, 141 employees to be retrenched
NTUC-affiliated union says affected workers will receive career and training support.
Gardenia will move its bakery production from Singapore to Johor Bahru, Malaysia, with operations at its Pandan Loop factory ending on 30 June.
The company said 141 employees at the facility will be retrenched as part of the move aimed at improving efficiency and staying competitive, Gardenia’s parent company QAF Limited announced in a press statement.
Affected employees will receive appropriate notice period and support in line with local regulations and guidelines. Gardenia added that some workers may be considered for other roles within the group where possible.
The Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union, an affiliate of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), was informed ahead of the announcement and is working with the company to support affected workers. They will be given access to job placement support, career coaching, and training through NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute.
Gardenia said Singapore will remain its main centre for functions such as brand management, product development, quality control, customer engagement, and supply chain operations. There are still 250 employees in the said market after the production shift.
The company added that its Singapore team will continue overseeing compliance with requirements from the Singapore Food Agency and the Health Promotion Board.
