Singapore emerges as the top education destination for parents in Asia

It is particularly popular amongst parents from Mainland China, Malaysia, Indonesia, and India.

Singapore has emerged as a hotspot for international education, especially for parents from Mainland China, Malaysia, Indonesia, and India.

Mainland China and India ranked Singapore among their top five choices, whilst parents from Malaysia and Indonesia placed it in their top three.

According to HSBC, Singapore has become the top choice for parents in Asia due to its geographical proximity and high-quality education.

“Singapore's growing appeal as an education destination reflects a wider trend in international education, particularly amongst younger parents in Asia," Ashmita Acharya, head of Wealth and Personal Banking, at HSBC Singapore said.

"With a unique combination of top-tier institutions, cultural familiarity, and geographical proximity, Singapore is becoming an an attractive choice for families.

Location has become an important factor for parents, especially parents of younger generations when sending their children for education overseas, said HDB

In its report, HSBC found that nearly 70% of Gen Z parents and millennial parents around the globe would overlook a university’s
ranking in favour of an institution closer to their home region.

Most parents (37%) will send their children overseas for education to increase their child's competitiveness, according to the report.

About four in 10 parents in Singapore echoed this, but more of them (39%) will send their children overseas to study because it will be good for their area of specialisation.

Other reasons why Singaporean parents would send their child abroad to study were for a better quality of education (32%), to encourage their child's independence (37%), and for their children to develop an international network (29%).
