Global ambitions drive Singaporean job seekers: survey

About 9 in 10 strongly prefer working for global firms.

Many Singaporean workers find going overseas attractive with over a third of them (33%) considering moving abroad for career development, compared to just 19% globally, according to a survey by Globalization Partners (GP).

The survey, which polled 2,000 executives and 4,000 professionals in six markets including Singapore, also revealed that more than half are considering remote work opportunities for a global firm without relocating– surpassing the global average of 42%.

Singaporeans also strongly prefer working for global firms, with 9 in 10 expressing interest, well above the global average of 80%. The prospect of better pay and benefits is a key driver, with 75% citing this as the most appealing aspect of working for global companies, a significant increase from 62% in 2023.

Whilst many employees see international experience as crucial for career growth, GP said challenges like language and cultural barriers, time zone differences, and reduced visibility with management persist.

Despite their interest in global companies, fewer employees believe these firms are better equipped to handle economic uncertainty. However, 40% feel they are more capable of managing geopolitical pressures, up from 34% last year.

Additionally, 97% of Singaporean employees are enthusiastic about artificial intelligence’s potential, particularly for automating tasks and enhancing analysis. Yet, 36% remain cautious about using AI, fearing their work might be undervalued by managers.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

If you've been wondering whether SBR could work for your company — yes, probably.

A lot of the companies we partner with started as readers. They'd been following our coverage for a while, saw their own customers and competitors in it, and eventually asked the obvious question: could we do something with you? The answer is usually yes. The shape of it depends on what you're trying to do.

The options are broader than most people assume — thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. Some partners use one channel; most use a mix. We figure out the right combination by starting with your brief, not with our rate card.

So if the question has been on your mind, here's the easy way to ask it.

We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how. It's a better use of everyone's time.
