Rentokil Initial wins big for an innovative environmental solution at the SBR Management Excellence Awards

The company successfully developed the world’s first high-attraction LED lamps, a modern solution to an age-old problem: attracting and containing flying insects quickly and securely and keeping them out of sight.

With over 120,000 species of flies worldwide, flies are considered pests due to the health and contamination risks they pose to humans, pets, livestock, and goods. A small fly problem left uncontrolled has the potential to develop into a severe infestation in a matter of weeks, as some fly species are able to mature from eggs to adults in just seven days.

In order to minimise contamination risk, it’s imperative that businesses take proactive steps with deterrent measures to help avoid costly treatments or contamination.

Following over twenty years of research and development, leading pest control provider Rentokil launched Lumnia, the world’s first insect light trap innovation that uses Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting rather than traditional fluorescent tubes. Entomologists have studied the optimal wavelength of ultraviolet light that flies detect and have tuned the spectral characteristics of the LED to match this wavelength. At this wavelength, where the flies see a huge amount of light, the light output is invisible to the human eye, making Lumnia a very unique and aesthetically pleasing solution in fly control.

The move to shatterproof LED light sources removes the significant risk of glass in food preparation areas and the burden of end-of-life fluorescent tube disposal. Lumnia covers every business need across many sectors, helping to combat fly infestations in places such as food processing facilities, hotels, supermarkets, warehouses, restaurants and more.

In real customer environments, Lumnia catches over 18 different types of flying insects, including the common house flies,  fruit flies, small flies, and many more.

It has versatile and modern design units ranging from slim, compact, standard, ultimate and suspended, designed to protect and suit every type of business need and environment. This innovation can reach up to 80% further than traditional fluorescent lamps and proves to be highly efficient and effective, catching flies faster or as fast as any other ILT on the market all the whilst reducing energy consumption by as much as 70%.

Lumnia also has several energy modes that will adapt day and night, reducing consumption, and contributing to a lower environmental footprint. The low-energy LED lamps have a three-year life span compared to the one-year life span of a traditional fluorescent lamp, contributing to a significant reduction in waste into our environment as well.

As a Planet-Mark-certified product, this environmentally friendly LED fly trap demonstrated 62% lower carbon emissions when compared to units containing compact fluorescent lamps (CFL).

In addition to that, Rentokil’s implementation is quick and convenient, and servicing is provided by highly qualified technicians.

Sales of Rentokil’s Lumnia have grown rapidly, having launched in over 65 countries and sold over 365k units to date, there are over 3 million Lumnia LEDs in the market and this number continuous to grow consistently, demonstrating the success of this novel product design.

With this sustainable approach, Rentokil Initial Asia Pacific Management wins the Innovator of the Year Award under the Environmental Service category at the Singapore Business Review Management Excellence Awards 2022.

Now in their eighth year, the awards honour the country’s most outstanding business leaders, including trailblazing teams and individuals whose initiatives have resulted in substantial business gains for their company’s operations.

Designed for a range of environments to reduce the risk of flies quickly and efficiently, Lumnia also won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation 2020 for being the world’s first commercial range of insect light traps that use LED lighting rather than traditional fluorescent tubes.
