SP offers diploma giving creatives path to boardroom

It builds strategy, business, and AI skills for career growth beyond design.

Singapore Polytechnic (SP) has launched a first of its kind part-time diploma aimed at helping creative professionals build business and strategy skills as employers increasingly expect designers to contribute beyond creative work.

The new Diploma in Design (Business & Strategy) will begin in October 2026 with the programme designed for working professionals who want to move into strategy, leadership, and business roles, SP said in a media release.

SP said the diploma was developed in response to the growing demand for designers who can combine creative skills with commercial thinking, in line with the goals of Singapore's Design 2035 Masterplan.

The curriculum covers brand strategy, digital marketing and business communications, with artificial intelligence (AI) integrated throughout the programme.

SP said students will learn how to communicate creative ideas in business terms, interpret market and audience data, and work more effectively with clients and stakeholders.

The programme was developed with input from industry partners, including Design Business Chamber Singapore (DBCS), Splash Productions, and Publicis Media Singapore.

"Designers who understand business and strategy are better positioned to influence decisions, unlock opportunities and deliver meaningful outcomes," said Hong Khai Seng, president of Design Business Chamber Singapore.

The diploma will be conducted in the evenings to accommodate working adults. It is modular, offers stackable certificates, and is eligible for SkillsFuture funding.

Singaporeans aged 40 and above may qualify for additional support under the SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy.

The programme is open to Institute of Technical Education graduates, working creative professionals, career switchers and adult learners.

Applicants need relevant work experience and three GCE O-Level passes.

"Many creatives are deeply skilled but narrowly positioned. This diploma helps them see the full picture—how business works, how decisions get made, and where they can play a bigger role," said Mark Lu, director of SP's Media, Arts & Design School.

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
