Singaporeans hit hard by war-driven cost hikes
Survey finds widespread impact on daily expenses including food, transport and dining.
Rising household costs were the most commonly reported impact of the ongoing US-Israel–Iran conflict amongst Singapore respondents surveyed by YouGov.
The survey found that 70% said the conflict had increased household energy costs, making it the most widely felt effect. Higher grocery bills followed at 56%, whilst 50% reported increased commuting costs and 49% cited higher spending on dining out or food delivery.
YouGov said older consumers, particularly Gen X and Baby Boomers, reported being more affected by rising energy and grocery costs than younger groups.
Beyond daily expenses, 36% of respondents said they were worried about investment volatility, whilst 33% cited higher airfares affecting travel plans to destinations outside the conflict zone.
The survey also found that 27% reported emotional or psychological strain linked to the developments, whilst 21% said travel plans to affected areas had been disrupted.
A further 14% reported that their industry has been affected due to connections with the affected region whilst only 2% of respondents said they were unaffected by any of the listed impacts.
